From 20 October 2022 to 26 March 2023, the Museo degli Innocenti hosted a major exhibition devoted to M.C. Escher, the artist who turned perspective, geometry and perception into images recognised around the world.
Escher in Florence: more than two hundred works
The exhibition brought together more than two hundred works and explored the themes that make Escher’s visual language instantly recognisable: impossible architecture, metamorphoses, tessellations, reflections and the continual shift between observed reality and mental construction.
The exhibition was produced and organised by Arthemisia in collaboration with the M.C. Escher Foundation and In Your Event, and was curated by Mark Veldhuysen and Federico Giudiceandrea.
An artist between mathematics and imagination
One reason for Escher’s enduring popularity is his ability to speak to very different audiences. His images can be read as sophisticated graphic constructions, but also as visual puzzles that challenge our certainty about space, up and down, inside and outside.
The Museo degli Innocenti as the exhibition venue
Hosting the exhibition in the Innocenti complex created an intriguing encounter between a twentieth-century artist and one of Florence’s most important architectural and social landmarks, closely associated with Filippo Brunelleschi.
The exhibition closed on 26 March 2023. This page remains online as an archive of the event.
