BEFORE STARTING YOUR VISIT
How to read the Florence map
Many of Florence’s most famous places are concentrated within a relatively compact area. Identifying a few landmarks will help you build a logical route and avoid unnecessary walking.
01
Use the Duomo as a landmark
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and Giotto’s Bell Tower stand at the heart of the historic centre and provide an excellent point of reference.
02
The Arno separates the two sides
North of the Arno are the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi and Santa Croce. Cross Ponte Vecchio to enter the Oltrarno, home to Pitti, Santo Spirito and Boboli.
03
Museums and churches take time
Distances are often short, but visits can take a long time. It is therefore useful to choose the places you want to explore in advance and check opening hours and reservation requirements.
FOUR AREAS TO IDENTIFY
The main places on the Florence map
For a first visit, you can divide the historic centre into four areas, each with different monuments, museums and atmospheres.
01
Duomo, San Lorenzo and San Marco
This area includes the Cathedral, Baptistery, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Medici district, the Medici Chapels, the Accademia Gallery and the San Marco Museum.
02
Dante, Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi
From Dante’s medieval district you can reach the Bargello, Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Loggia dei Lanzi and the Uffizi Gallery.
03
Santa Croce and eastern Florence
The area includes the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Horne Museum, the Badia Fiorentina, Sant’Ambrogio and some of the most characteristic streets in the historic centre.
04
Ponte Vecchio and the Oltrarno
On the other side of the Arno are Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Gardens, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria del Carmine, artisan workshops and panoramic routes towards San Miniato al Monte.
A FIRST WALKING ROUTE
From the railway station to the Oltrarno through the heart of Florence
An introductory itinerary can begin at Santa Maria Novella, continue to the Duomo complex and pass through the streets of medieval Florence to Piazza della Signoria.
From the Uffizi, the route continues towards the Arno, crosses Ponte Vecchio and enters the Oltrarno, where the character of the city changes among palaces, churches, squares and artisan workshops.
This route introduces the historic centre and can be adapted by adding a museum, a church or an artistic theme. To explore it with an English-speaking private tour guide in Florence, tell Giulia your available time and interests: she will help you plan a walk at a pace suited to your group.
