In 2020, during a particularly difficult period for tourism, the travel project Travelers Generation invited me to talk about my work as a tour guide in Florence. Looking back at that interview today, many of the answers still describe very well the way I approach this profession.
I have therefore kept this conversation in my notebook as a small record of my relationship with Florence, art and the people I accompany through the city.
From Florence’s civic museums to guiding
I began working as a licensed guide in 2010 after gaining experience in Florence’s civic museums, where I was involved in educational activities and theatre workshops. Working with school groups, private visitors and small groups taught me early on that the same place can be approached in very different ways.
Over time I devoted myself increasingly to guiding and to art-historical research and criticism. The common thread has always been the desire to create a connection between people and works of art rather than simply listing names and dates.
Why I prefer small groups and tailor-made visits
Most of my work is with small private groups who contact me directly through this website. This makes it possible to plan the visit around the travellers themselves: their interests, the time they have available, the places they already know and the questions they want to explore.
A first-time visitor may want the essential story of Florence; someone returning to the city may prefer a museum, a church, an artist or a lesser-known neighbourhood. For me, personalisation is not an extra detail: it is part of the way a guided visit becomes meaningful.
Telling the story of Florence beyond the obvious
The great monuments are essential, but Florence also reveals itself through details, workshops, smaller collections, stories and connections that are easy to miss. This is the Florence I like to share: a city in which art, history and everyday life continually overlap.
