Natalia Goncharova: a woman of the avant-garde
Produced and organised in collaboration with Tate Modern in London, the exhibition celebrated Natalia Goncharova, a central figure of the early twentieth-century avant-garde.
More than 150 works explored her wide-ranging activity as painter, costume designer, illustrator and stage designer. Her work was placed in dialogue with artists including Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Umberto Boccioni.
The exhibition highlighted Goncharova’s ability to combine different visual languages and traditions and presented her as a pioneering figure who helped redefine the role of women in modern art. It was also the first exhibition Palazzo Strozzi had devoted to a woman artist of the modern era.
