The first monographic exhibition on Ottavio Leoni
Faces and Stories: Ottavio Leoni (1578–1630) was the first monographic exhibition devoted to the celebrated portraitist. Sixty-one works, many of them drawings produced between the late sixteenth century and 1629, portrayed a wide range of figures from Roman society.
Nobles, members of papal families, cardinals, soldiers, government figures, poets, musicians and artists appeared alongside women from ordinary life observed and drawn by Leoni.
A substantial part of the group belonged to the Accademia Toscana di Scienze e Lettere “La Colombaria” and was being presented to a wider public. Other loans included material from the Biblioteca Marucelliana, Museo Horne and the Uffizi collections, including a miniature portrait of Maria de’ Medici.
The exhibition was curated by Piera Giovanna Tordella and admission was free.
