Contemporary sculpture in the historic Boboli Gardens
Sixteen monumental works by Tony Cragg were installed throughout some of the most evocative areas of the Boboli Gardens, creating an unexpected dialogue between contemporary sculpture, the ordered landscape of the garden and the view over Florence.
The exhibition covered roughly twenty years of the British sculptor’s work, from 1997 onwards. Steel, bronze, resin and other materials appeared as fluid, twisting or organic forms, revealing new relationships between matter and the environment.
Cragg’s sculptures were placed near locations such as the Buontalenti Grotto, the Amphitheatre and the Palazzina della Meridiana. The contrast between their primal energy and the garden’s historical structure offered visitors a new way of reading both the artworks and Boboli itself.
The exhibition was curated by Eike Schmidt, Jon Wood and Chiara Toti.
