Yan Pei-Ming. Painter of Histories at Palazzo Strozzi
In 2023 Palazzo Strozzi presented Yan Pei-Ming. Painter of Histories, the largest exhibition in Italy at the time devoted to the Franco-Chinese artist. The project formed part of Palazzo Strozzi Future Art, developed with the Fondazione Hillary Merkus Recordati.
Known for a powerful reflection on painting in contemporary art, Yan Pei-Ming brings together history and the present, famous works of art, public figures and intimate subjects in monumental canvases. Curated by Arturo Galansino, the exhibition brought together more than thirty works and focused on the artist’s investigation of the relationship between image and reality.
Portrait, landscape, still life and history painting are all present in his work. His paintings often begin with photographic sources: personal images, newspaper covers, film stills and celebrated works from art history. The result is a dialogue between personal experience and collective history, and between cultural symbols from East and West.
The exhibition was promoted and organised by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi. For the historical exhibition page, see the official Palazzo Strozzi archive.
